Video: Drone Flies Into an Active Volcano

Check out this awesome video of a DJI Phantom 2 flying trough an active volcano as it spews up hot lava at it! Luckily, no drones were harmed in the making of this film.

The inside of an active volcano can reach temperatures of up to 1,100 degrees Celsius! Great footage like this is really only possible with the advancement of drone technology, allowing unmanned glimpses into an area that would normally be much to dangerous to film.

What type of quadcopter was used?

This was shot with a DJI Phantom 2 with a brushed gimbal for stabilization of the GoPro that was attached to it. This machine is largely regarded by the community as the gold standard when it comes to quadcopters with an average flight time of around 20 minutes. If you would like to learn more about the best drone for your GoPro, check out our recent blog post about it.

Where was this filmed?

Vanuatu is a country just a 2 hour flight away from the east coast of Australia. It has been known as one of the happiest places on earth and is home to some amazing volcanic activity.

I want to learn to fly, where do I get one?

Hold on just a minute before you go off and spend $1200 on a new toy. Quadcopter drone controls take some getting used to so we recommend you start with something small like the Hubsan X4 ($60). After you have absolutely mastered that mini drone, then consider looking at Amazon or Ebay for a Phantom 2.

Happy Flying!
