Designed from the ground up as a companion to the GoPro HERO, the Solo Quadcopter from 3D Robotics features aerial imaging-specific flight modes including Cablecam mode and Follow Me. A quad-rotor configuration, flight stability and autonomous flying are enabled thanks to a twin computer flight control system. The flight controller relies on GPS for navigational coordinates, plus uses data from gyros, accelerators, and other sensors to keep the aircraft safely flying. The Solo is designed to be paired with the separately available Solo Gimbal, a 3-axis stabilizer compatible with the a GoPro HERO3+ or HERO4 action camera.
This is a ready-to-fly bundle, featuring a pre-bound transmitter (radio controller) that has been styled after a video game controller for more intuitive operation. In addition to dual joysticks for flying, it features dedicated dials for operating the optional Solo Gimbal. In addition to the transmitter, there is a mobile app for iOS and Android devices. The app provides full control over the aircraft, gimbal, and even the GoPro itself. A mount is provided so that you can mount your smartphone or tablet up to 8" directly to the transmitter.
A flight battery providing up to 25 minutes flying time as well as a charger are included. In addition, the included transmitter features its own dedicated battery.
I want to be very clear before I write anything else. I've been following this product since it's inception and launch and am very well aware of the all issues it's had along the way. I am reviewing this product based on the state of its right now, not what it was months ago, which is all that is important to me. I've just finished my 10th flight and feel like I have a firm grasp of the platform and feel educated enough to share my experience and opinion. I bought this as tool for my videography/photography background. I didn't buy this as a toy or for a fun hobby, (there is nothing wrong with that, just providing context).
I've had the Solo for a little over a week now. I received it ironically on the day the 1.3 firmware update came out which contained a lot of performance and feature improvements and additions. The update was quick, easy and flawless. Took minutes. I have been lucky enough to ONLY experience 1.3 so I haven't experienced any bugs or problems and I'm only aware of them because of my past research. So from my perspective, Solo has been nothing but amazing. I've never owned or flown a UAV before and I feel very confident with Solo after only week. I've flown it at night and over the ocean now without a single problem. I've lost signal once in a highly populated suburban area at around 800 ft (which is very common based on what I've read) and Solo returned immediately and a few seconds later, I got connection back. No panic, no worry, it was just perfect and awesome. Everything I've read works as advertised. First person flying on your tablet or phone is an amazing rush and works so well. The smart shots are simple and easy to execute, yet extremely powerful in practice. And for a first time UAV/Drone operator like myself, Return to Home and PAUSE are amazing features that help me so much. I can't say enough about this platform and I'm looking forward to seeing how it evolves and improves further. Great product and some of the best customer service I've experienced.
